2011-2012 State Project, Continuing the Legacy of Freedom and Opportunity
For this years state project, State President Jane Richardson will raise funds for the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund, a non-profit organization that gives college scholarships to the children of Massachusetts soldiers who died in Iraq or Afghanistan. They have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom, and their children continue that legacy of sacrifice every day. Many of the children of our fallen Massachusetts soldiers may not have the money to attend college. The Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund (or MSLF) was launched in 2004 by a student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to provide scholarships for these children. Over 160 Massachusetts soldiers have died in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and about two-thirds of them were parents. Therefore, about 60 children are eligible for a scholarship to help pay for their college education. The MSLF grants $10,000 for each year of college per child.
